If you’ve considered legitimate home-based businesses, the thought has probably crossed your mind: can you make money on Amazon?

Amazon has been America’s top online retailer for years. This year, they had enough sales to break into the top 10 of US retailers overall. I’ve loved buying from them for years (and made Christmas shopping way more pleasant in the process).

People love Amazon.  People trust Amazon.  People buy from Amazon without worry.

So there has to be some opportunity to make money with Amazon, right?

Yes, you can make money on Amazon

Great! So how can you do it?

The way to make money with Amazon is called affiliate marketing

I’ve talked about it before, but here’s a quick recap: affiliate marketing involves promoting another company’s products and earning a small percentage of any sales you directly create.  Your earnings are called commissions.

Amazon has one of the world’s largest affiliate programs, called (surprise) Amazon Affiliates.  They weren’t the first affiliate program but they were the first to be a major, global success.

I mention hamsters, so here’s a picture of a cute Chinese dwarf hamster.

Once you join Amazon Affiliates you can promote almost anything they offer, from products to services

You already know how wide Amazon’s selection of products is.  But did you know that you could earn commissions for getting people to join Amazon Prime, buy mobile phones on contract or trade-in their old mobile phones?  You can.

There are many ways to do it, but making money on Amazon works.

How hard or easy is it?

I probably sound like a broken record, but you have to look at it like a real business. Does a real business get built overnight? Nope. Does a real business grow without effort? Nope. The same goes for affiliate marketing.

But the good thing is that unlike opening up a store on Main Street, becoming an affiliate marketer doesn’t cost that much – and it can be learned.  I offer a free email course on it if you want to learn more too (more on that at the end of this post).

How much can you make?

The biggest factor is traffic – how many people visit your website every day.  (this is also the biggest reason you won’t be an overnight success – building up traffic takes time)  Once you have a steady stream of visitors with you’ve developed trust (that is, they like you and know you’re not just trying to make a buck off them), the opportunity for making money grows.

At one end of the extreme, you can barely break $1 a month.  On the other end of the extreme, you can make $50,000/yr (and you need CRAZY traffic too).

It also depends on what products you promote or how many products you can sell per month.  Here are Amazon’s commission rates for specific product categories and the volume-based rates for all non-specified product categories:

What do you need to earn money with Amazon?

First, you need a website.
You need a place for people to come where they read your content, see product images or links, and click on them to visit Amazon.  If they buy something within 24 hours – anything, not just what you promote on your site – you’ll make a commission.

Second, you need a niche.
niche is an audience of people, interested in something specific.

This is where affiliate marketing can be fun because you can choose a niche that YOU like.  Love to read spy novels?  You can blog about books and spy gadgets – with links for both to Amazon. Love hamsters?  You can blog about how to take care of them and share links to useful books for owners or pet supplies.  You get the idea – if you like it, you build a niche marketing website around it.

Third, you need traffic.
Without people visiting your website, there won’t be any commissions – it’s as simple as that.  The more people who visit, the more commissions you can make.

It’s vital to learn how to generate traffic – in addition to learning how to build a website and pick a profitable niche.  You can see how this is building a real business, right?

What do you think – could this be a business opportunity for you?
